Donald Trump seems to be campaigning for a position that could be described as a President-King. While scholars might rummage through complex terminology like “fascism” to label his inclinations, the underlying aspiration is starkly clear: Trump desires the Executive branch to reign supreme, sidelining the checks and balances that were historically established.
His current agenda appears fixated on elevating the presidency above the legislative and judicial branches that were designed to temper its power. Trump seems bent on unilaterally dictating policy, aiming to consolidate decision-making authority into his hands alone.

The blueprints of our government, crafted by the Founding Fathers, delineated authority among three branches to prevent the usurpation of power by a single entity. This balance was intended as a bulwark against authoritarianism.
Despite Trump’s attempts to destabilize this foundational structure, it’s worth noting that, surprisingly, much of the governmental system continues to function properly and curtail his more extreme ambitions.
During a recent interview on ABC, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker responded to inquiries regarding potential repercussions from Trump’s Department of Justice targeting him.
Pritzker remarked:
It’s true that the president vocalizes intentions that sometimes translate into actions, with the authority bestowed upon him by the office. However, he cannot supersede the Constitution.
So, am I apprehensive? Not at all. Do I think he might attempt it? Perhaps. But as I’ve said, I stand ready. Come and get me.
You are completely mistaken, Mr. President and Mr. Vice President. I will champion the law and the Constitution, which is the ethos we uphold in the state of Illinois.
While Trump lacks the constitutional might to override or ignore foundational law, Pritzker’s comments—particularly regarding the Insurrection Act—further illuminate the boundaries of Trump’s authority and the constitutional protections that are currently in place.
