Fifty Jeffco Public Schools Employees to Be Laid Off Due to Budget Cuts

Fifty employees of Jeffco Public Schools have been informed that their positions will be eliminated by the end of the current school year. Additionally, the cash-strapped district will also cut 90 positions that are either vacant or will become available due to retirements, as stated in an announcement on the district’s website.

These layoffs are part of a larger effort to reduce about 139 full-time equivalent positions within various departments in the district’s central office. The affected employees have been notified throughout this week, leading to a somber atmosphere within the school community.

As a result of the budget constraints, Jeffco Public Schools will also implement service cuts across different departments, including fewer menu options for meals, increased responsibilities for custodians, delayed repairs, and reduced support for technology and professional development.

Superintendent Tracy Dorland had previously warned the school board about the potential need to eliminate up to 150 positions due to the district’s financial crisis. Over the past few fiscal years, Jeffco Public Schools has been operating at a deficit, with a projected loss of $39 million for the upcoming year.

The decline in student enrollment and subsequent reduction in per-pupil state funding have contributed to the financial challenges faced by the district. Efforts to raise additional revenue through a mill levy increase will be put to a vote in November, with the outcome potentially impacting future budget decisions.

Despite the tough decisions and hardships faced by the district, the announcement emphasized the importance of working together to build a financially sustainable future for Jeffco Public Schools. The goal is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve their aspirations within a strong and stable educational environment.
