Jeremy Strong on Straight Actors Playing Gay: Valid to Criticize

Jeremy Strong, known for his role as Roy Cohn in “The Apprentice,” recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate regarding straight actors playing gay characters. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Strong expressed that while he believes it is valid to criticize straight actors for taking on gay roles, he also emphasized the importance of an actor’s ability to portray characters outside of their own experiences.

The actor acknowledged the significance of authenticity in portraying diverse identities on screen, stating, “I’m sort of old fashioned, maybe, in the belief that, fundamentally, it’s [about] a person’s artistry, and that great artists, historically, have been able to, as it were, change the stamp of their nature.” Strong firmly believes that it is an actor’s duty to immerse themselves in roles that may not align with their own backgrounds.

While Strong does not deem it necessary for gay roles to exclusively be played by gay actors, he does advocate for giving more weight to the representation of LGBTQ+ performers in such roles. This sentiment echoes a growing sentiment within the entertainment industry for increased diversity and inclusion in casting decisions.

The conversation around straight actors portraying gay characters has been ongoing in Hollywood, with actors like Nicholas Galitzine expressing feelings of uncertainty and guilt when taking on queer roles. Galitzine, who identifies as straight, voiced his concerns about potentially occupying space that could be filled by LGBTQ+ actors, despite his commitment to portraying characters beyond their sexuality.

On the other hand, veteran actor Stanley Tucci has defended the practice of performers embodying different sexualities on screen. Tucci, known for his portrayals of gay characters in films like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Supernova,” emphasized that an actor’s role is to embody a variety of identities and experiences, regardless of their own orientation.

In conclusion, Jeremy Strong’s insights into the debate surrounding straight actors playing gay roles add to the ongoing dialogue within the entertainment industry. While opinions vary on the matter, the push for increased representation and authenticity in casting remains a crucial aspect of promoting diversity and inclusivity in film and television.
