A Call for Transparency from Mayor Zohran Mamdani

A Jewish civil rights organization is seeking clarity from newly inaugurated Mayor Zohran Mamdani after previous posts addressing antisemitism were removed from the official mayoral account of New York City, sparking legal concerns.

The National Jewish Advocacy Center pointed out that two posts made by the previous Mayor Eric Adams, highlighting efforts against antisemitism in the city, were deleted shortly before Mamdani took over the account. This action has raised questions about transparency and accountability.

The organization expressed its disappointment in a letter to Mamdani, stating, “It is troubling that one of your initial actions as Mayor was to delete official tweets from @NYCMayor addressing the safety of Jewish New Yorkers.”

The letter, also sent to the Department of Investigation and the Conflicts of Interest Board, emphasized the importance of preserving public records, especially on social media platforms like Twitter.

Deleting these posts without archiving them first may be in violation of the city’s charter, and the organization urged Mamdani to consider the impact of such actions on public trust and the safety of the Jewish community.

While Mayor Adams had shared updates on the city’s efforts to combat antisemitism, the removal of these posts by Mayor Mamdani has raised concerns about his stance on the issue.

Despite facing criticism for his views on Israel and Palestine, Mamdani has made efforts to engage with the Jewish community and address their concerns. However, his decision to delete these posts has called into question his commitment to combating antisemitism.

As Mayor Mamdani begins his term, the National Jewish Advocacy Center has urged him to reconsider his approach and prioritize transparency and accountability in his administration.

It remains to be seen how Mayor Mamdani will address these concerns and uphold the values of inclusivity and respect for all New Yorkers.
