Ryan Blaney’s hopes of advancing in the NASCAR In-Season tournament took a major hit during Saturday’s Cup Series race at Echopark Speedway. A late spin by Christopher Bell caused a chain reaction that involved Blaney, Austin Dillon, Bubba Wallace, AJ Allmendinger, Kyle Busch, and Kyle Larson. Blaney, who entered the tournament as the seventh seed, was caught up in the mess and expressed his frustration, stating, “It’s the story of our year. Getting caught up in other people’s garbage.”
The crash had significant implications for the tournament, with Blaney and the No. 12 team being knocked out of the race. Carson Hocevar, the 26-seed, benefitted from the incident and will advance to the next round, surpassing Blaney in the rankings. NASCAR on X highlighted the impact of the crash, stating, “The No. 20 spins in front of the field and collects @Blaney and @austindillon3! Huge In-Season Challenge implications here!”
Despite the setback, Blaney has had a solid season so far, currently sitting sixth in the driver standings with seven top-fives, eight top-10s, and 503 points. His win at Nashville has already secured his spot in the playoffs. Last week at Pocono Raceway, Blaney displayed his resilience by overcoming heat exposure and dehydration during The Great American Getaway 400. Despite the challenges, he managed to finish third, the highest among Team Penske drivers.
Looking ahead, Blaney will aim to bounce back at the upcoming Grant Park 165 in Chicago. Scheduled for Sunday, July 6, the 75-lap event will be broadcast on TNT at 2 pm ET. Fans can also tune in for live radio updates on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
As Blaney continues to navigate the ups and downs of the NASCAR season, his determination and talent will be put to the test. With the support of his team and fans, he remains a strong contender in the competitive world of motorsports.
