The LA Lakers made a bold move when they traded Anthony Davis to acquire Luka Doncic, but this decision left a major void in their interior defense. The team explored a trade for Hornets center Mark Williams to address this issue, but ultimately backed out due to concerns about his injury status. As a result, Lakers coach JJ Redick turned to Jaxson Hayes as the starting center. However, Hayes has not proven to be reliable and has struggled to make an impact, playing less than 10 minutes in a playoff game.

In Game 3 of the first-round series, where the Lakers fell 116-104 to the Timberwolves, Hayes only played nine minutes, scoring just two points and grabbing one rebound. Redick expressed his frustration postgame, highlighting the team’s lack of rim protection and how it is affecting their overall defensive strategy. The Lakers allowed Jaden McDaniels to score a career-high 30 points in the game, showcasing their struggles to defend the paint effectively.

Hayes has struggled defensively, posting a minus-13 in his limited playing time. The Timberwolves took full advantage of the Lakers’ depleted frontcourt, outscoring them in the paint and on the fast break. The team’s turnovers also proved costly, with the Timberwolves converting them into points.

The Lakers’ options at center are limited, with Alex Len being the only other player on the roster. Len has seen minimal playing time and was only on the court for 39 seconds in garbage time during Game 3. Redick also revealed that Doncic was battling illness during the game, which may have impacted his performance.

Despite Doncic’s illness, he still managed to contribute with 17 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. LeBron James was a standout performer for the Lakers, finishing with 38 points on efficient shooting. Game 4 of the series is set for Sunday, where the Lakers will look to bounce back.

In conclusion, the Lakers’ struggles in the frontcourt and on defense have been evident in their recent games. Redick and the coaching staff will need to address these issues quickly to have a chance at advancing in the playoffs. The team’s reliance on Hayes and the lack of rim protection have become glaring weaknesses that need to be addressed moving forward.
