The 2025 Nantucket Film Festival was a night to remember as three talented writers were honored during the prestigious Screenwriters Tribute event. Joanna Calo, known for her work on “The Bear” and “Thunderbolts*,” was awarded the Excellence in Television Writing accolade. The award was presented to her by “The Bear” star Lionel Boyce, a touching moment that highlighted their close friendship.

The event, hosted by Michael Ian Black, also saw Tony Gilroy, the creator of “Andor,” being honored with the Visionary Storyteller Award, presented by writer/director Scott Frank. Additionally, award-winning documentary director Alex Gibney was recognized with the Special Achievement in Documentary Storytelling honor.

During her acceptance speech, Calo expressed her gratitude for the recognition and the opportunity to be among such esteemed company. She particularly thanked Scott Frank, whom she described as the smartest writer she had ever known. Calo also extended her appreciation to the festival and the audience for their support and love for movies.

Reflecting on her time at the festival, Calo mentioned her current project involving the history of Nantucket and the inspiring women from the area. She expressed her fascination with the island and its stories, emphasizing the importance of exploring and learning from its rich heritage.

In a heartwarming moment, Lionel Boyce shared his admiration for Calo’s dedication and talent, especially noting her ability to juggle motherhood with her professional commitments. He marveled at her work ethic and creativity, highlighting her impressive contributions to “The Bear” and other popular shows like “Bojack Horseman,” “Girlboss,” and “Hacks.”
