African elephants are known for their majestic tusks, with some bulls growing tusks so long that they scrape the ground and weigh well over 100 pounds. These giant ivory incisors continue to grow throughout the elephant’s life, with males typically having larger tusks than females.
However, these magnificent creatures, known as “Big Tuskers,” are facing a significant threat from poachers who hunt them for their ivory. In nature preserves like Kenya’s Tsavo East National Park and Amboseli National Park, there are only a few dozen Big Tuskers left.
Photographer Johan Siggesson has captured the beauty and vulnerability of these endangered elephants in a series of striking black-and-white photographs. From charming juveniles to iconic Big Tuskers like Craig and emerging contenders like the 35-year-old Michael, Siggesson’s images showcase the incredible anatomy, habitat, and behavior of these gentle giants.
Prints of Siggesson’s photographs are available for purchase on his website, where you can explore more of his captivating work. Follow him on Instagram for more stunning images of elephants and other wildlife.
One of Siggesson’s photos, titled “Face to Face,” portrays a straight-on portrait of a Big Tusker elephant, highlighting the sheer size and presence of these magnificent animals. In another photo, titled “Michael,” the 35-year-old elephant is captured in all his glory, showcasing his impressive tusks and stature.
Siggesson’s work also includes images of elephant herds moving through the Kenyan landscape, emphasizing the importance of preserving their natural habitats. “At the Foot of the Mountain” and “Hot Pursuit” capture the elephants’ grace and power as they navigate their surroundings.
In a poignant photo titled “Craig & Tree,” Siggesson pays tribute to the iconic Big Tusker Craig, who passed away in 2026. The image shows Craig near a tree, beneath a cloudy sky, symbolizing the loss of these magnificent creatures to poaching and habitat destruction.
Through his photography, Johan Siggesson sheds light on the beauty and fragility of African elephants, urging us to take action to protect these incredible animals for future generations.
