The Río Magdalena, a stunning river in Colombia, flows gracefully north through the nation’s western regions, embodying a rich tapestry of history that spans pre-Columbian civilizations and the era of Spanish rule. Named in honor of Mary Magdalene, it stands as a potent emblem of Colombia’s cultural identity and resilience. Johanna Ortiz has channeled this profound heritage into her spring line, aptly named Magdalena, celebrating her Colombian lineage.

Ortiz’s most significant tribute to her country’s cultural legacy is her unwavering dedication to local artisanal craftsmanship. At her atelier in Cali—established to uplift and empower local artisans—approximately 480 skilled craftsmen, 78% of whom are women, bring her creative visions to fruition. This workspace also features a school dedicated to teaching and preserving time-honored techniques. Although silks and jerseys are imported from Italy, every garment is meticulously produced in-house, underlining Ortiz’s commitment to the genuine artistry present in Colombian crafts.

This season’s collection was inspired by the vibrant textures of tropical environments. Rich, earthy hues characterized sporty cropped jackets layered over Ortiz’s signature fluid long dresses, accentuated by high-waisted corset belts made from natural fibers. These elegant forms were often styled with matching shawls or adorned with glittering sequined elements. Ortiz infused personal narratives into her designs, incorporating pieces from her cherished collection of mochila bags—traditional woven creations crafted with care by the Kankuamo community from the Sierra Nevada. “At this stage in my life, I find a strong connection to the river,” Ortiz reflected. “We often tend to circle back, striving a bit too hard. Right now, I’m learning the beauty of letting things unfold naturally. This collection embodies that feeling—embracing each day as it comes, welcoming new adventures and unexpected magic with open arms.”
