John Lawrence Sullivan Wins Berlin Contemporary Competition at Berlin Fashion Week
It was a significant moment for Berlin Fashion Week and the art of tailoring. The Berlin Senate sponsors the “Berlin Contemporary” competition each season to promote innovation, sustainability, and creative diversity. Among this season’s winners was the Japanese label John Lawrence Sullivan, led by creative director Arashi Yanagawa. This win not only brought visibility and reputation to Berlin but also showcased the talent of international designers.
Arashi Yanagawa, a former boxer, draws inspiration from his athletic background, as well as metal music and subcultures. Since 2010, he has included womenswear in his creative repertoire, with a focus on tailoring. Yanagawa’s fascination with British suits, inspired by the Rolling Stones, began in high school and laid the foundation for his career.
Backstage, Yanagawa explained, “I learned the rules of tailoring in order to break them.” His designs featured forward-falling shoulders and exaggerated arm bends, creating a unique and defensive posture. Drawing parallels to boxing, Yanagawa emphasized the importance of self-defense over blind attack. While clean silhouettes dominate the female looks, his menswear collection includes bursts of silver leather and faux fur arm warmers on minimalist tuxedos.
When asked why he chose Berlin, Yanagawa mentioned his admiration for German music artists in the metal scene. He also identified industrial character elements in his fashion that align with German aesthetics. The synergy between his designs and the city made Berlin Fashion Week the perfect platform to showcase his work. The overwhelming applause from the audience indicated a positive reception, hinting at a potential long-term partnership between John Lawrence Sullivan and Berlin Fashion Week.
