On the latest episode of “The Daily Show” aired on Monday night, Jon Stewart criticized President Donald Trump for abruptly leaving a recent interview on “Meet the Press” due to persistent fact-checking by interviewer Kristen Welker.
Stewart remarked, “You might see this as the tantrum of an extremely sensitive individual with very thin skin, unable to step out of the comforting circle of his devoted followers.” He added, “Honestly, I can’t see it any other way. It’s just that. It’s unfortunate. Very unfortunate.”
The interview with Trump on “Meet the Press” saw tensions rise as Welker questioned him about his intentions regarding a contentious $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund. This fund aims to shield those who claim federal persecution, including participants in the January 6 Capitol riot. Trump asserted that those involved in the riot had “lost everything” afterward, and claimed that “FBI agents ushered them into the building” on that day. Welker challenged this statement, pointing out that Trump had “no evidence of that.”
Trump responded to Welker, “I’m unsure about the future of the weaponization fund,” expressing his support for the concept. He criticized the media, referring to it as “fake dirty press” and “crooked press,” and accused “stupid Biden” and those around him of destroying lives and imprisoning innocent people.
The discussion then shifted to the 2020 presidential election, which Trump labeled as “rigged,” and he also alleged fraud in California’s election system. Welker consistently fact-checked Trump throughout the conversation.
Finally, Trump ended the interaction, telling Welker, “You’re a one-sided crooked network. Sorry. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time,” before leaving the interview.
