Jon Stewart Returns to “The Daily Show” Desk to Recap Vice President Kamala Harris Certifying Election
After a three-week hiatus, Jon Stewart made his triumphant return to “The Daily Show” desk to discuss Vice President Kamala Harris certifying the presidential election of Donald Trump. This significant event coincided with the four-year anniversary of the Capitol insurrection, adding an extra layer of historical context to the proceedings.
Stewart humorously remarked on the snowy scene in Washington, D.C., comparing the blanket of white snow covering the Capitol to the anger and chaos of the previous insurrection. He noted the lack of disruption caused by the snow, quipping about the absence of bear spray and Confederate flags in the current situation.
On Jan. 6, Vice President Harris took on the role of certifying the votes for the incoming president, despite having lost to Trump in the 2024 election. Stewart highlighted the irony of Harris presiding over the event as the “master of ceremonies.”
Stewart played a clip of Harris announcing Trump’s votes from Florida, which was met with applause from some congress members. He jokingly commented on the awkwardness of the situation, likening it to attending your own funeral where the mourners cheer for your opponent.
Continuing with the theme of applause, Stewart highlighted the positive reception Harris received when announcing her own votes from California. He humorously speculated on the possibility of Harris still winning the election if certain votes were found in key states.
Despite the humorous commentary, Stewart praised the smooth execution of the certification ceremony, emphasizing the importance of accepting defeat gracefully in a democracy. He subtly referenced Trump’s behavior without naming him directly, underscoring the need for a mature and respectful transition of power.
