New Beginnings for Jonathan Cohen in 2022
As the new year begins, Jonathan Cohen is embarking on an exciting new chapter by joining forces with Marina and Ricardo Larroudé to produce his ready-to-wear collections in Brazil. This partnership will see Cohen presenting his designs under two distinct lines: White Label and Black Label. The White Label pieces will be available in see-now, buy-now drops, while the more intricate Black Label pieces will be released on an as-ready basis.
Marina Larroudé expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We saw an opportunity to bring more creatives into this power machine that we were able to create in terms of a company and then add their layers so then they can take care of just the creativity part. So the vision, the products, the design—all of it—it’s Jonathan, but it’s powered by us as the backend.”
While Jonathan Cohen himself may not be seen wearing the dresses, separates, and shoes from this collection (except for the scarves), he designed them with the “aspirational customer” in mind. The White Label line is aimed at this customer demographic, offering considered design at an accessible price point. With fifteen years of experience in the industry, Cohen understands the fit and sense of fun that his customers desire.
Instead of focusing solely on concept design, Cohen has prioritized practicality and versatility in his latest collection. The pieces are designed to seamlessly integrate into an existing wardrobe, with pre-tied details and carefully draped silhouettes that cater to the wearer’s needs. From shirtdresses to pants, tops, and wrap dresses, the collection features a curated selection of essential pieces.
Prints play a significant role in Cohen’s designs, with hand-painted patterns like black and white stripes and red ditsy florals making a statement in this drop. While the silhouettes remain consistent, the choice of material, such as denim and upcycled black satin from Larroudé’s factories, adds a unique touch to each piece. Sustainability is a key value for the brand, reflected in the use of upcycled materials and environmentally conscious practices.
Color is introduced through intricate detailing, such as vari-colored zig-zagged stitching and custom buttons that adorn the garments. The playful yet sophisticated aesthetic of the collection evokes a sense of tradition reminiscent of fashion icons like Stephen Burrows and Byron Lars.
With this new collaboration and collection, Jonathan Cohen is poised to make a lasting impact in the world of fashion, offering a fresh perspective on accessible and stylish ready-to-wear designs.
