A federal judge in Vermont has made a significant ruling ordering the Trump administration to release Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts University student whose sudden arrest in March sparked public outcry. Ms. Ozturk, a former Fulbright scholar, has been in detention since March 25, when she was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents outside her home in Somerville, Mass. The agents, wearing masks and plainclothes, handcuffed her and swiftly transported her to Louisiana via New Hampshire.

Her lawyers have argued that the government’s decision to detain her was unconstitutional and retaliatory in nature, stemming from her exercise of protected speech. The primary piece of evidence against her seems to be an essay critical of Israel that she contributed to in a Tufts student newspaper last year. The video footage of Ms. Ozturk’s arrest quickly went viral, stirring public outrage over her treatment and allegations that the government is exploiting the immigration system to deport international students.

During her six-week detention in Louisiana, Ms. Ozturk reportedly faced unsanitary conditions that exacerbated her asthma, leading to severe asthma attacks. In a recent development, a federal appeals court directed that she be transferred to Vermont for a bail hearing, scheduled for next week. However, Judge William K. Sessions opted to proceed with the hearing while she remains in Louisiana and ordered her immediate release.

It is important to note that this story is still unfolding, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further developments on this case.
