Historical Events on this Day:

On June 12, 2016, a tragic incident unfolded at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where a gunman took the lives of 49 individuals and injured 53 others in what was then considered the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The shooter, Omar Mateen, declared his allegiance to the Islamic State group before being killed by the police after a three-hour standoff.

In 1964, Nelson Mandela and seven other anti-apartheid activists were sentenced to life imprisonment for acts of sabotage against South Africa’s apartheid regime.

In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court, in the case of Loving v. Virginia, invalidated state laws that banned interracial marriages, deeming them unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment.

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan, while visiting Berlin, urged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall” in reference to the Berlin Wall.

In 1991, Russians participated in their first-ever presidential election, resulting in victory for Boris Yeltsin.

In 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were tragically murdered outside Simpson’s residence in Los Angeles, leading to a highly publicized trial where O.J. Simpson, Nicole’s ex-husband, was acquitted of the crimes in a criminal court but found liable in a civil lawsuit.
