Historical Events on This Day:

On June 3, 1943, the Zoot Suit Riots erupted in Los Angeles after an altercation between U.S. Navy sailors and young Mexican Americans, leading to clashes and injuries.

Additionally, in 1844, the last known great auk specimens were killed on Eldey island near Iceland.

On a lighter note, in 1888, the iconic poem “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer was first published in the San Francisco Daily Examiner.

Fast forward to 1935, the French liner SS Normandie set a transatlantic record on its maiden voyage, reaching New York in just four days.

In 1937, the Duke of Windsor, who had abdicated the British throne, wed Wallis Simpson in a private ceremony in Monts, France.

Jumping to the space age, in 1965, astronaut Edward H. White made history as the first American to walk in space during the Gemini 4 mission.

On a somber note, in 1989, Chinese troops cracked down on pro-democracy demonstrations in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

Switching gears to sports, in 2017, rock climber Alex Honnold achieved a remarkable feat by solo climbing El Capitan in Yosemite without ropes or safety gear.
