In a dramatic expansion of their ongoing investigation, Republican Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson have turned their focus towards the key players behind the controversial FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago. This inquiry comes in the wake of the August 2022 operation, during which the FBI, under the Biden administration, seized multiple boxes of documents from former President Trump’s Florida residence.
In an operation reminiscent of a military incursion, over three dozen heavily armed agents stormed Mar-a-Lago, a spectacle that was soon followed by the appointment of a special counsel by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to probe the documents in question. This raid was spurred by the National Archives’ (NARA) request for documents from Trump earlier that year.
Interestingly, court documents have revealed that the FBI was authorized to use deadly force during the raid, a directive that came straight from Attorney General Merrick Garland. Adding to the controversy, critics have pointed to images released by the FBI, which they claim were staged to present the ‘classified’ documents in a sensational manner.
Grassley and Johnson have formally requested that the National Archives hand over all communications involving the Biden White House, the FBI, and the DOJ regarding the Mar-a-Lago raid. They are particularly focused on uncovering the Biden administration’s alleged role in the investigations targeting then-presidential candidate Trump.
In a press release, the Senate Judiciary Committee outlined the senators’ demands, which include:
- All documents related to the DOJ, FBI, and Biden White House discussions surrounding President Trump’s election interference case, which began under the codename “Arctic Frost” and evolved into Jack Smith’s elector case.
- Any communications between DOJ, FBI, and Biden White House officials regarding the investigation into Trump’s purported mishandling of classified documents.
- All records from NARA, including those from its Office of Inspector General, associated with the Arctic Frost and classified document investigations.
Last month, Grassley and Johnson unveiled new findings that shed light on the extensive investigation that laid the groundwork for Jack Smith’s case against Trump. They have previously exposed what they describe as a politically motivated investigation orchestrated by a compromised DOJ and FBI.
Details from the newly released documents indicate that the FBI and DOJ utilized their authority to target Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, and their associates through the “Arctic Frost” operation. This taxpayer-funded effort, initiated in April 2022, involved seizing government-issued cell phones from Trump and Pence and conducting a flurry of interviews nationwide.
Notably, the FBI did not require a warrant to seize these government phones from the Biden White House, but once they had secured the devices, agents began the process of obtaining a search warrant to delve into the data, as reported by Fox News.
The senators allege that FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Timothy Thibault bypassed standard protocols—specifically the “No Self-Approval Rule”—to initiate the investigation that would eventually morph into Special Counsel Jack Smith’s contentious case against Trump, which is based on dubious claims of “fraudulent” activities related to the 2020 election.
Whistleblower documents reveal that the FBI aggressively pursued over 50 subpoenas and secretly collected records from more than 100 facilities and email accounts, all in an effort to construct a case against Trump and his inner circle. Furthermore, the records show a coordinated effort between prosecutors in the US Attorney’s Office in DC and FBI agents to strategize and execute the Arctic Frost operation.
