Former Vice President Kamala Harris shared her thoughts on Tuesday regarding her loss in the 2024 election to President Trump, stating that one of the principal reasons was that she simply “didn’t have enough time” to campaign.
When asked by co-host Ana Navarro on “The View” about the key reasons for her defeat, Harris reflected, “There are multiple factors involved in the outcome of that election.”
She further elaborated, “However, in my opinion, one of the biggest issues was our lack of time.”
In promoting her book “107 Days,” which reflects on the duration of her campaign, she noted the challenges posed by President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race just three and a half months before Election Day.
“When [Biden] chose not to run, the sitting vice president took on the challenge of competing against a former president who had been campaigning for ten years, with only 107 days before the election,” Harris described, emphasizing the “unprecedented” nature of her campaign struggles.
She characterized the 2024 election as “the closest presidential race in the 21st century.” The campaign reportedly incurred an astonishing $1.5 billion expenditure over her brief 15-week run, ultimately resulting in Harris losing the popular vote, the Electoral College, and all seven swing states to Trump.
Harris’s recent appearance on “The View” served as a comeback following a troubling October 2024 interview that negatively impacted her campaign.
During that segment, co-host Sunny Hostin inquired if there was anything Harris would have approached differently compared to Biden. Harris’s response, “There isn’t a thing that comes to mind,” raised eyebrows.
In her book, Harris confessed she had a planned answer to that inquiry but ultimately failed to deliver it. “I’m not Joe Biden and I’m certainly not Donald Trump,” she recalled wishing she had articulated during the interview.
She added, “To specifically answer your question, throughout my career, I have engaged with Democrats, independents, and Republicans, recognizing that great ideas come from diverse sources. If I were president, I would include a Republican in my cabinet.”
“However, I didn’t express any of that,” Harris admitted regretfully.
Reflecting on the fallout from her blunder, she described being completely unaware that she had “pulled the pin on a hand grenade.”
“With my team scattered around the set, they were in a state of agitated concern,” Harris expressed.
Additionally, she recounted how a staff member passed her a note during a commercial break, urging her to revisit the question and mention the potential of appointing a Republican in her cabinet.
Although she eventually made that point, she lamented, “the damage was done,” branding the gaffe as a “gift to the Trump campaign” which limited her association with an unpopular president.
Feeling remorseful, Harris reflected, “Why didn’t I distance myself from Joe Biden?”
