Kandy G. Lopez is an artist based in Fort Lauderdale who creates stunning large-scale embroidered portraits of people from historically marginalized communities. Drawing on her Afro-Caribbean ancestry, Lopez celebrates the style, culture, and heritage of individuals as a way to foster connections and spark conversations about representation.

Lopez began working with mesh and fiber nearly a decade ago, but it wasn’t until 2021, during her residency at The Hambidge Center in Georgia, that she fully embraced this medium as a central aspect of her practice. With a background in painting, Lopez’s compositions often feature minimal backgrounds, allowing the vibrant figures to take center stage. Each piece showcases life-size figures dressed in colorful attire, their gazes directly engaging the viewer.

Visibility, presence, and representation are essential themes in Lopez’s work. Through the use of materials like yarn and acrylic paint, she explores the concept of how BIPOC individuals can “disappear and reappear,” weaving together ideas of community, resilience, and storytelling. The gridded backgrounds in her pieces evoke neighborhood street patterns and the layered warp and weft of woven fabric, symbolizing transparency, layers, and vulnerability.

Represented by ACA Galleries, Lopez’s work can be viewed on her website and Instagram. Her pieces, such as “R² – Roscoe and Reggie,” “Reyna,” and “City Girls,” showcase the intricate detailing and vibrant colors that characterize her embroidered portraits. Each piece tells a unique story, highlighting the beauty and strength of the individuals portrayed.

In addition to her individual portraits, Lopez also creates group portraits, such as “Miami,” which feature multiple vibrantly dressed figures against colorful backgrounds. The level of detail and craftsmanship in her work is truly remarkable, capturing the essence and spirit of the people she portrays.
