FBI Director Kash Patel has intervened in an investigation led by Joe Kent, Tulsi Gabbard’s advisor, into the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Kent, the head of the National Counterterrorism Center, delved into FBI files to determine if there was any foreign involvement in Kirk’s tragic murder, where he was shot in the throat while speaking at Utah Valley University.
Patel raised concerns about Kent overstepping his boundaries by interfering in an ongoing FBI probe. A meeting was called at the White House, attended by Patel, Kent, Gabbard, Vice President JD Vance, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and senior DOJ officials, to address the fallout from Kent’s actions.
Kent claimed he accessed FBI files through a low-ranking official, but Patel shut down any further initiatives by the Counterterrorism Center to explore foreign connections to Kirk’s assassination. The fear among Trump administration officials was that Kent’s investigation could sow doubt about the sole culpability of Tyler Robinson, the man charged with Kirk’s murder.
The jurisdictional issues between Gabbard’s office and investigative powers of the FBI have led to confusion about ongoing investigations into potential foreign involvement in Kirk’s assassination. Patel and Gabbard issued a joint statement assuring that no stone will be left unturned in the investigation.
Kent, a former CIA employee and Green Beret veteran, who has been disrupting narco-terrorist cells and cartels, now finds himself in the center of controversy. Despite his unsuccessful bids for Congress as a staunch MAGA loyalist, Kent’s current focus on the Kirk assassination has raised eyebrows and sparked concern within the Trump administration.
