They’ve done all this work, and then you come in and you’re like, ‘I want to be a bartender,’” Hudson says with a laugh. “And they’re like, ‘But why? We’ve done all this work for you to take over the family business.’ It’s that push and pull of wanting to be your own person and also wanting to honor what your parents have created.”

For Buss, who has never been married and doesn’t have children, the idea of exploring that dynamic through Isla was a way to delve into what she might have missed by not having those traditional markers of success. “I was raised by two parents who were married for 54 years. They created an amazing family, and so I’ve always been looking for that,” Buss says, reflecting on her decision to prioritize her career over starting a family. “I think that’s something that Isla Gordon can really bring to life on the show.”

But it was also important to make sure that Isla was more than just a stand-in for Buss. “We didn’t want her to just be Jeanie Buss in a different world,” Kaling explains. “We wanted to create a character that was fully fleshed out, with her own quirks and her own struggles that weren’t necessarily autobiographical.”

As for what the future holds for Isla and the L.A. Waves, Hudson and Kaling are tight-lipped. “You’ll have to watch to find out,” Kaling teases. But one thing’s for sure: the show is as much about the love of the game as it is about the love of family. And with a cast of characters that includes a motley crew of players, coaches, and staff, there’s no shortage of drama, humor, and heart in “Running Point.”

“Running Point” is a new comedy series that blends family dynamics with sports, creating a unique and entertaining story. In a recent interview, the creators and stars of the show, Mindy Kaling, Jeanie Buss, and Kate Hudson, discussed the process of crafting the show and the inspiration behind its fictionalized premise.

Kaling explains that turning the focus onto a fictional team, the Waves, allowed the creators to protect the real-life relationships of Jeanie Buss while also adding outrageous and comedic elements to the show. By fictionalizing the team and storylines, the creators were able to explore more creative and entertaining plotlines without being tied down to real-life events in the sports world.

Jeanie Buss, who has real-world experience in the front office of a sports team, shared her thoughts on the collaboration and the importance of humor in the workplace. She emphasized the message of family and relationships within the show, highlighting the relatability of a family-owned business even in the glamorous world of sports.

Kate Hudson, who plays the character Isla in the show, discussed the comedic sensibilities she brought to the role and the importance of physical comedy in the series. She also praised the ensemble cast and writing team for their support and talent in creating a cohesive and hilarious show.

One memorable moment in the series is when Isla hypes up the team by comparing them to “John Wick,” leading to a hilarious Keanu Reeves impression by Kate Hudson. Kaling expressed her admiration for Hudson’s performance and the unexpected humor it brought to the scene, showcasing the actress’s versatility and comedic timing.

Overall, “Running Point” promises to be a comedy series that combines heartwarming family moments with laugh-out-loud humor. With a talented cast and creative team behind the scenes, the show has the potential to become a fan favorite and a standout in the world of sports comedies. Kate Hudson and Mindy Kaling recently sat down to discuss their new series, “Running Point,” and the excitement surrounding the prospect of more seasons. Hudson shared her trepidation about previous series, citing the long hours and hard work involved. However, with “Running Point,” she expressed her love for the project, the character she plays, and the world they have created. Kaling added that she hopes Hudson will continue to be involved in future seasons, drawing parallels to Larry David’s long-running show, “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

The duo also touched on the joy and love they experienced while working on the series, with Hudson joking about getting weird after hour 14 on set. Kaling mentioned the stacked cast and the potential for more stories in future seasons, praising the characters they have developed. Hudson even playfully threatened misbehaving cast members with trades for the next season.

Jeanie Buss, whose memories inspired the story of “Running Point,” expressed her humility and admiration for Kaling’s ability to capture the essence of real-life events in the show. She praised the rich material from her book and hinted at the possibility of the show continuing for many seasons to come. The interview concluded with a note of gratitude for the engaging conversation.

Overall, “Running Point” promises a blend of heart and humor, thanks to the talented performers like Kate Hudson and the creative minds behind the scenes. With the potential for more seasons and exciting storylines ahead, fans can look forward to more laughter and heartwarming moments in the world of “Running Point.”
