The controversial documentary about Melania Trump has been pulled from theaters in South Africa for what is being described as “political reasons.” According to a report from Deadline, the decision to yank the film may be related to comments made by former President Donald Trump regarding the treatment of white Afrikaner farmers in the country.
Trump has been vocal about what he perceives as a “genocide” against white South Africans, stating that they are “being killed and slaughtered” and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated. These comments were part of the reason he gave for declining to attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg in November 2025.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Afrikaners are being killed and slaughtered, and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated.” He also made it clear that no US Government Official would attend the G20 as long as these alleged human rights abuses continued. Instead, he expressed his anticipation for hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida.
With the US assuming the G20 presidency in 2026, South Africa made the decision to temporarily withdraw from the organization in order to de-escalate tensions between the two countries. Trump’s administration has been facing trade issues with South Africa, as well as concerns over the country’s close ties with Russia and China through BRICS.
Political experts believe that South Africa’s withdrawal from the G20 was a strategic move to avoid any potential crises with the United States. Johannesburg professor Koffi Kouakou stated, “South Africa wants to avoid any problem, any crisis with the United States, and it is a really rational decision.”
The decision to pull the Melania documentary from South African theaters underscores the complex political dynamics at play between the US and other countries. It also highlights the impact of political statements and actions on cultural and artistic expression.
