Former California Representative Katie Porter is facing criticism from her gubernatorial race opponent, who is showcasing her own comments in a new advertisement highlighting a tense moment during a TV interview. The ad features Porter’s emotional outburst with a CBS News reporter.

Antonio Villaraigosa, the former mayor of Los Angeles, has released a three-minute spot that captures the full exchange where Porter displayed abrasive behavior, expressed her desire for a more pleasant experience, and attempted to leave the interview.

Porter, 51, is currently leading the polls among candidates for California governor, including Villaraigosa, yet is under scrutiny for her immature reactions, as her controversial remarks come to light once again.

The advertising campaign, recognized as the first extensive commercial for any California gubernatorial contest, started airing on CBS stations in the Sacramento area early Thursday, the same network that hosted the revealing interview.

Titled “In Katie Porter’s Own Words,” the ad concludes with Villaraigosa’s voice stating, “We need leaders who will tackle difficult problems and respond to straightforward questions.”

The ad ran only twice on Thursday and incurred a cost of approximately $20,000, according to a spokesperson for Villaraigosa’s campaign.

The peculiar exchange between Porter and CBS reporter Julie Watts first aired on Monday, quickly going viral as Porter accused the journalist of being “unnecessarily argumentative.”

“I’m not interested in disregarding any vote. Every Californian deserves access to affordable healthcare, safe streets, housing, and a living wage,” commented former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra on X.

Former State Controller Betty Yee even urged Porter to withdraw.

“Katie Porter is a weak, self-destructive candidate unfit to guide California. The consequences are too significant for her to remain in this race,” she tweeted.
