In a heartfelt revelation, Katie Thurston, 34, has shared her emotional journey while battling breast cancer, a diagnosis she received back in February.
On September 30, Thurston took to her Instagram Stories, visibly moved, as she addressed her followers about her ongoing struggle. She poignantly acknowledged the onset of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, saying, âTomorrow is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Iâm, like, totally crashing out if Iâm being so for real. I donât know what Iâm even saying, guys. I just want to be so honest. I know I seem positive sometimes, but itâs very hard to be positive.â
Thurston, who gained fame as a contestant for Matt James on The Bachelor in 2021, described her breast cancer experience as anything but straightforward.
She expressed her initial optimism for this year’s end, hoping it would mark a turning point. Instead, she lamented, âI was very much looking forward to, like, the end of the year kind of being my final push and then itâs smooth sailing. You know, like, treatmentâs working, things are good. Instead, itâs like Iâm hurting my liver, Iâm lowering my dose of medication, Iâve postponed my surgery, which I havenât even talked about yet.â In her previous updates, she revealed plans for a double mastectomy scheduled for November.
While retaining some privacy about her surgical plans, she assured her followers that her ânext scansâ would take place in two weeks, coinciding with a visit from her mother and niece. âThatâll be good because Jeff [Arcuri] is gone, [adding] a whole other layer,â she stated, referring to her husbandâs tour across Australia.
In recent posts, the reality star has been forthright about the toll that social media speculation is taking on her. Following a wave of troubling messages and rumors surrounding her health, stemming from a false obituary, she expressed, âI literally wanted to take time away from social media, but then I was getting, like, texts from people I donât normally hear from. Then, I got DMs from people, and everyoneâs like, âAre you OK?ââ
Thurston continued with a candid reflection on the impact of this misinformation, stating, âIâve seen this article go around before, but something about tonight really f***ing pisses me off. Itâs, like, triggering, and I try to report it. Thereâs just nothing I can do, and I just feel helpless. Iâm just so mad right now. Like, if anyone works at Facebook [or] has any suggestion on what I can do, please tell me.â
Thurston first shared her diagnosis in February after discovering a lump, initially brushing it off as possible muscle soreness or a premenstrual symptom. However, this lump persisted and led to a stage IV diagnosis once it spread to her liver. Just a month later, she married Arcuri, 37, solidifying a new chapter amidst testing times.
