Keira Knightley has taken a thrilling turn in her acting career, immersing herself in high-stakes narratives that demand both emotional depth and adrenaline rushes. Following her riveting portrayals as an Iraq War whistleblower in Official Secrets, a determined investigator in Boston Strangler, and the action-packed deadly Helen Webb in Black Doves, the talented London-based actress is stepping into yet another captivating role in The Woman in Cabin 10. This Netflix adaptation directed by Simon Stone transforms Ruth Ware’s acclaimed 2016 novel into an edge-of-your-seat thriller.
Set against the chilling backdrop of a glamorous super yacht, the film centers around Laura “Lo” Blacklock, a tenacious journalist tasked with covering a high-profile event attended by chilly billionaires. When a harrowing incident unfolds one night in the pitch-black ocean, Lo believes she’s witnessing a crime and is determined to unravel the truth, despite being gaslit by her sinister hosts, played by a stellar cast including Guy Pearce, Hannah Waddingham, Daniel Ings, and Kaya Scodelario.
As the story unfolds, Knightley describes Lo as “a dog with a bone—she won’t let it go.” The narrative is packed with clever sleuthing, relentless psychological manipulation, a near-fatal incident at the swimming pool, and a suspenseful climax that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
In a recent Zoom interview, Knightley radiates energy, sporting her chic side-parted bob and a delicate Valentino shirt with a lace collar. She effortlessly combines candor with humor, sharing a glimpse of her glittering gold boots while discussing her latest film. “They’re extraordinary,” she declares. “I’m all-in on this outfit.”
As the film gears up for its October 10 release, Knightley delves into her passion for “silly and crazy” red carpet fashions, her hopes for a second season of Black Doves alongside Ben Whishaw, her excitement about an upcoming Bend It Like Beckham sequel, and her debut children’s book inspired by her experiences as a mother to two young daughters.
Vogue: You’ve recently taken on roles that involve uncovering the truth, like in Official Secrets and Boston Strangler. What attracts you to such narratives?
Keira Knightley: It’s all about the entertainment! I have a soft spot for stories with that Miss Marple twist, and I wanted to bring a more modern edge to it. This film harkens back to those intense 1970s thrillers, reminiscent of The Parallax View and The Conversation, and here’s my chance to do a contemporary take on that.
Lo embodies a tough, sardonic vibe that you’ve portrayed before.
Yes, her confidence is rare! In a world where many characters dwell in uncertainty, playing someone so steadfast made me feel empowered, even while experiencing terrible events throughout the film! [laughs]
Your coast is filled with gripping performances by actors like Guy Pearce and Hannah Waddingham. Did you share any memorable off-camera moments while filming?
They are just the sweetest people, despite being so deliciously villainous on screen! [laughs] I envisioned us toasting with Champagne and enjoying the luxurious yacht experience, but the reality was quite different. Due to restrictions, we couldn’t sit on any furniture or walk on the carpets. The yacht was designed for a cozy group of 12; with a crew of 70 and 20 cast members, it felt less like a vacation and more like something out of a claustrophobic dream.

After this, you’ll reprise your role in Black Doves. What can fans expect in the next chapter of Helen’s journey?
We just began filming this week! Expect even more suspense, chaos, and, of course, cashmere. Ben and I are eager to explore darker action sequences this time around. We’ve got some exciting new characters joining us, and the read-through was nothing short of exhilarating.
The impact of Bend It Like Beckham on audiences persists. With a sequel in progress, what do you envision for Jess and Jules?
It’s incredible to witness its lasting influence. At the time, people were skeptical about the film’s premise. I personally find it heartwarming to see my eldest daughter enjoy it now. Girls her age are engaged with the film and she felt encouraged to watch it, which is a lovely testament to its enduring message.
And how does the surge in women’s football resonate with you, especially considering the recent Euro Championships?
Watching the Lionesses during the Euros was an emotional experience. My daughter shared about a dream in which she scored a winning goal at the event. It moved me deeply, realizing that such dreams were not a part of my childhood but now belong to her generation.
With a script for a Bend It Like Beckham sequel being written, what’s your theory about Jess and Jules’s current lives? Could they become a couple?
We have joked about their relationship being pivotal! [laughs] During discussions, it seems like Jules might emerge as a coach with Jess opposing her. There are countless possibilities to explore after so many years.

Shifting gears to fashion, have you been enjoying the creative freedom in your wardrobe choices lately, especially after turning 40?
I adored the ruff in my recent Erdem look; it added a regal touch! It felt like the ideal attire for charging into battle as a warrior queen! Creating a narrative through clothing is so enjoyable for me. While I generally prefer casual attire, red carpet events allow for a remarkable transformation where I can experiment and have fun with fashion.
What about Matthieu Blazy’s upcoming Chanel debut? Will you be watching closely?
I won’t be able to attend since I’ll be busy with Black Doves, but I anticipate checking it out online! I’ve admired his work before and am eager to witness his creative direction.
And when can we expect to see you in new Chanel threads?
I’m keen to showcase his collections soon! I might just nudge them a bit to reserve some stunning pieces for me! [laughs]
Additionally, I hear you have a children’s book titled I Love You Just the Same coming out. What inspired this story?
It originated as a bedtime routine with my daughter. She’d ask me to draw her a picture, and one day when my youngest was teething, Edie pondered whether I could sketch a bird taking the baby away! That whimsical notion led to a story about sibling rivalry, separation anxiety, and ultimately unconditional love—all wrapped up in a delightful children’s tale.
Have you always had a creative inclination towards drawing?
Drawing has been a passion of mine since childhood. It’s amusing—just as I received greenlit from my publisher, I jumped into Black Doves filming. Juggling two wildly different projects, transitioning from intense action to delightful illustrations, was a unique but fulfilling blend of experiences.
Returning to film, do you think your next project might be a period drama? What would entice you back to that genre?
I cherish period pieces! However, having done several, I need to find a character unlike any I’ve portrayed before. My current focus leans towards captivating genre thrillers that keep audiences guessing, like the ones I’m involved with in Black Doves. But in the future, perhaps I could explore an Elizabethan character or join a treacherous Medici plot!
And finally, what’s on your Netflix watchlist these days?
House of Guinness? I’ve always been a fan of James Norton.
The Woman in Cabin 10 will stream on Netflix starting October 10.
