Keith Urban conspicuously sidestepped the topic of his estranged wife Nicole Kidman during a pre-split interview with Ryan Seacrest earlier in the year.
In a conversation recorded less than three months before Kidman, 58, officially filed for divorce from the country music star, 57, Urban appeared on Seacrest’s syndicated radio show, On Air With Ryan Seacrest, on July 23. This interview unfolded just days before Kidman served Urban with divorce papers on Monday, September 30.
Seacrest, who had collaborated with Urban on American Idol between 2013 and 2016, brought Kidman into the dialogue by passionately praising her impressive range of projects. âDo people tell you your wife is in everything? Nicole Kidman is in everything,â he remarked, eliciting a hearty laugh from Urban, who then deftly attempted to change the subject.
âYeah, she’s almost as busy as you but not quiteâvery close though,â Urban replied, his evasion showing signs of the impending separation.
Seacrest continued to heap praise on Kidmanâs multifaceted career, citing her role in Nine Perfect Strangers. âShe makes the greatest choices. I was watching one of her series last night⊠she can get evil, diabolical,â Seacrest noted, all while Urban maintained a somewhat stoic expression, barely audible as he muttered, âyeahâ from off-camera.
A subtle shift took place when Seacrest inquired, âIs that something with your life, her life and mapping it all out⊠thatâs a job, isnât it?â Urban solemnly nodded, confessing, âItâs a job, yeah,â his gaze absently wandering away from the lens, perhaps pondering the complexities of co-existing in their high-pressure lives.
A colleague chimed in, acknowledging the couple’s shared responsibility of raising their two daughtersâSunday, 17, and Faith, 14. Notably, Kidman also has Connor, 30, and Isabella, 32, from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise.
This prompted Urban to quip, âYes, exactly, no, life is in session,â emphasizing the ongoing challenges they face.
As the interview neared its conclusion, Seacrest remarked on Urbanâs commitment to family amidst a busy career. âPeople know you take great pride in making time for each other, which is why youâve been together for 19, maybe 20 years?â Seacrest observed.
Urban responded affirmatively, âMm-hmm, yep,â before shifting the conversation back to his musical endeavors.
Us Weekly confirmed on September 29 that Urban and Kidman had officially separated following nearly two decades of marriage.
In a rather telling move, Kidman cited irreconcilable differences in her divorce filing, submitted the day after the interview. She noted the date of separation coincided with her filing date, indicating a swift and presumably tumultuous conclusion to nearly two decades of marriage. Furthermore, reports reveal Kidman requested to be the principal caregiver for their children, Sunday and Faith, outlining a proposed arrangement where she would spend 306 days with them while Urban would have them for 59 days.
This legal development followed a period marked by Kidmanâs solo appearance at the Met Gala, their last public outing occurring in Nashville just days before their 19th wedding anniversary on June 20.
