A GOP Senator Pushes for Proof-of-Citizenship Voting Bill Despite Trump’s Opposition
Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, is urging party leaders to pass a proof-of-citizenship voting bill known as the SAVE Act. President Trump has criticized the bill for being too “watered-down.”
Kennedy, a co-sponsor of the SAVE Act, believes that despite not having enough votes in the Senate, the bill could be advanced through the budget reconciliation process.
He suggested using reconciliation as a way to bypass the 60-vote threshold and move the bill forward, similar to how the GOP passed other legislation in the past.
While there are challenges in using reconciliation for non-budgetary items like the SAVE Act, Kennedy remains determined to push the bill through.
Trump has threatened to block any congressional legislation until a stronger version of the bill, the SAVE America Act, is approved. This new version includes additional requirements for voter registration.
The debate over the SAVE Act and its enhanced version continues in Congress, with Republicans emphasizing the need for enforcement of citizenship requirements in voting.
Despite legal restrictions on states implementing citizenship proof requirements, Republicans argue that such legislation is crucial for election integrity.
Democrats have raised concerns about the potential impact of these bills on certain groups, such as newly married women facing difficulties due to name changes.
