A Kentucky state senator, Johnnie L. Turner, tragically passed away at the age of 76 after sustaining injuries in a freak accident where he fell into a swimming pool while on a riding lawn mower. Turner, a Republican who was also an attorney and a US Army medic, served in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002 before being elected to the state Senate for District 29 in 2021.

The accident occurred on September 15 when Turner accidentally drove a riding mower into the deep end of an empty swimming pool. Despite a valiant battle, Turner succumbed to his injuries. Known for his advocacy for pro-coal industry legislation and economic measures in his district, Turner’s untimely death has left a void in Kentucky politics.

Due to the proximity of his passing to the upcoming election, Turner’s name will still appear on the general election ballot, with his only challenger having recently withdrawn from the race. Write-in candidates have until Friday to file for the seat, otherwise a special election will be held to fill the vacancy.

Colleagues and political figures remembered Turner as a dedicated public servant and a compassionate individual who always put others first. His commitment to the people of Eastern Kentucky and his tireless efforts to uplift his community were highlighted by those who knew him best. Turner’s legacy lives on through his family, including his wife, three children, and grandchildren.

Born on Christmas Day in 1947, Turner’s life was marked by service and dedication to his country and his constituents. His passing is a great loss to the state of Kentucky, but his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
