Kevin Owens made a heartfelt return to WWE at SummerSlam, where he paid tribute to AEW’s Rebel, who is currently battling ALS. He expressed how much she inspired him.
In an unexpected twist, the Undisputed WWE Championship number one contender match, initially set between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor, became a Fatal Four Way. Nick Aldis announced the addition of Gunther, and then surprisingly included Kevin Owens, who had not competed since the Elimination Chamber 2025 Unsanctioned match.
Owens not only returned but triumphed in the match, securing his place as the number one contender for CM Punk’s world title. During the SummerSlam Sunday post-show interview, Owens credited those who supported his recovery and physical conditioning after his significant injury.
He also took the opportunity to commend Rebel for her brave fight against ALS, highlighting her grace and the inspiration she provides.
“There’s somebody called Tanea Brooks, who’s known to wrestling fans as Rebel. She has not wrestled here, but some things are bigger than wrestling. She’s currently battling ALS, and the way she’s doing it is so incredible. I looked at her and what she was going through, and the way she powered through it, and it was truly inspirational.” [H/T WrestlePurists on X]
Owens’ gesture was warmly received by many. In support of Rebel, AEW announced a special episode of AEW Dynamite titled “Rebel Heart” to honor her on September 9.
