Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, has acquired the rights to Ashley Elston’s bestseller “First Lie Wins,” which is set to be adapted into a thrilling series. Kevin Williamson, known for his work on popular shows like “Dawson’s Creek” and “The Vampire Diaries,” is attached to co-write and executive produce the series. Elston herself will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

The exciting news was announced by Jordan Moblo, the evp of creative acquisitions and IP management at Universal Studio Group, during a conversation at SCAD TVfest. “First Lie Wins,” originally published in 2024 and selected as a Reese’s Book Club pick, marked Elston’s entry into the adult fiction genre after establishing herself as a prominent figure in the world of YA literature. The novel achieved international success, being translated into over 30 languages and selling more than one million copies.

The series will center around the character of Evie Porter, a con artist who takes on new identities for her enigmatic employer. However, Evie’s carefully constructed facade is put in jeopardy when her past catches up with her, threatening the seemingly perfect life she has crafted with her fiancé. As she faces this dilemma, Evie must devise a final trap to secure her escape.

Kevin Williamson, who has a longstanding relationship with Universal TV through his company Outerbanks Entertainment, brings a wealth of experience to the project. Having created hit shows like “The Waterfront” and “The Vampire Diaries,” Williamson is a seasoned storyteller known for his work in the thriller genre. His involvement in “First Lie Wins” adds a layer of excitement and anticipation for fans of both the book and his previous projects.

With the combined talents of Williamson, Elston, and the production team, “First Lie Wins” is poised to captivate audiences with its gripping narrative and complex characters.

As the series moves forward in development, fans can look forward to experiencing the intricate world of “First Lie Wins” brought to life on screen. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated adaptation.
