In an exciting announcement, DR Sales has confirmed the upcoming premiere of the Indian crime drama “Search: The Naina Murder Case” on JioHotstar next month. This new series is inspired by the acclaimed Danish television series “The Killing” (“Forbrydelsen”), which was initially crafted by DR Drama. Notably, this adaptation marks the fourth time the celebrated Nordic noir series has been reimagined internationally.
Directed by Rohan Sippy, the series features a talented cast including Konkona Sen Sharma from “Mumbai Diaries,” Surya Sharma of “Hostages,” Shiv Panditt known for “Shaitaan,” and Dhruv Sehgal from “Little Things.” Comprising six gripping episodes, the show has been produced through a collaboration between Applause Entertainment and Highgate Entertainment.
The original version of “The Killing,” created by Søren Sveistrup, debuted on DR1 in 2007 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, playing a pivotal role in the rise of the Nordic noir genre across the globe. The series follows the journey of detective Sarah Lund, portrayed by Sofie Gråbøl, whose unique knitwear and relentless pursuit of justice became iconic. The show ran for three seasons, distinguished by its real-time storytelling and the intricate weaving of political commentary into the crime narrative. The series garnered accolades, including a BAFTA, and was distributed in over 100 countries worldwide.
“Every new adaptation of ‘The Killing’ is an incredible honor,” expressed Sveistrup. “It stands as an ongoing tribute to the remarkable talent and vision of the creators of the original series. We developed a compelling narrative that struck a chord with millions globally, elevating Danish TV drama on an international level beyond our wildest dreams. Congratulations to ‘The Killing’ for its continued success and lasting legacy.”
Prior adaptations of the series include the American version that aired on AMC from 2011 to 2014, achieving considerable acclaim; a Russian rendition was released in 2016; and in 2022, the Middle Eastern and North African audiences were introduced to “Monataf Khater” on Shahid VIP.
DR Sales is actively broadening its scripted content catalog, having recently received a greenlight from FX for a new project titled “Cry Wolf,” with more format adaptations anticipated to be announced shortly.
Don’t miss the premiere of the series, which will be available for streaming on JioHotstar starting October 10.
