A personal bag belonging to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was stolen from a restaurant in Washington, D.C. The bag contained her government identification, $3,000 cash, and other personal items, as reported by CNN.
Noem had planned to use the cash to treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts. Her entire family, including her children and grandchildren, were in town at the time of the incident, according to a Homeland Security spokesperson.
The former governor of South Dakota has three children and four grandchildren. The U.S. Secret Service, responsible for her protection, is investigating the theft, which was captured on security footage showing a white man in a medical mask taking the bag and leaving the restaurant.
The Secret Service is also monitoring for unauthorized financial transactions using Noem’s personal belongings. When asked for comment, the Secret Service referred inquiries to the Department of Homeland Security.
Since assuming office, Noem has actively sought photo opportunities, including accompanying immigration officers on raids and visiting locations like the U.S. border and a Salvadoran mega-prison where deported immigrants are housed.
