After four years as Disney’s chief communications officer, Kristina Schake is set to depart next month as Bob Iger concludes his tenure as CEO. This move comes as part of a larger executive shakeup at Disney, with Josh D’Amaro taking over as CEO and Dana Walden being promoted to president and chief creative officer.
Schake joined Disney in 2022 during a tumultuous period under former CEO Bob Chapek. Her predecessor, Geoff Morrell, faced internal criticism and was linked to a number of communication mishaps during Chapek’s tenure. Despite keeping a low profile, Schake was respected for her extensive experience and for improving coordination among Disney’s communications executives.
When Iger returned as CEO in 2022, there were rumors of a change in the communications leadership. However, Schake earned Iger’s trust and continued in her role. Iger praised her as a skilled strategist, trusted advisor, and admired leader who had a lasting positive impact on Disney’s communications strategy.
Schake’s background is in politics and public service, having worked for the Biden administration and as a top aide to Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton. She also co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Her contract with Disney was extended last October, but there is no word yet on her successor.
In a statement, Schake expressed gratitude for her time at Disney and praised the company’s progress under Bob Iger’s leadership. She looks forward to her next challenge and is confident in Disney’s future under the new leadership of Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden.
Both Iger and Schake sent memos to Disney employees announcing the transition. Iger thanked Schake for her leadership and wished her the best in her future endeavors, while Schake expressed gratitude to the communications team for their dedication and creativity during her time at Disney.
As Disney enters a new chapter under new leadership, the communications team will play a crucial role in shaping the company’s narrative and engaging with stakeholders. The talent and creativity of the team will be instrumental in driving Disney’s growth and success in the future.
