On a seemingly ordinary day in Los Angeles, Maurice Benaim’s plans to run a quick errand and enjoy a Lakers game were abruptly disrupted by a harrowing encounter with a mob of bike-riding teens. The incident unfolded at the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Carillo Drive in Central LA, where a large group of around 20-30 teenagers took over the roadway, impeding Benaim’s path.
In an interview with NBC Los Angeles, Benaim recounted how he honked his horn to alert the teens of the changing traffic light, only to be met with hostility as they began kicking his car. The situation escalated when one of the cyclists threatened to have a gun and proceeded to smash Benaim’s right taillight. Fearing for his safety, Benaim got out of his car to address the teens, leading to a vicious physical assault.
The brutal attack left Benaim with facial and head injuries, as well as emotional trauma from the traumatic event. Images shared by his brother on GoFundMe revealed a large bruise on his upper right eyelid, prompting the family to launch a fundraiser to cover medical expenses and car repairs. The funds raised would also support Benaim’s therapy and psychological well-being as he struggled to cope with the aftermath of the assault.
Fortunately, bystanders intervened to help Benaim as the delinquents fled the scene, leaving him lying on the road. Despite the ordeal, Benaim expressed gratitude for the support he received and emphasized the importance of seeking justice against the perpetrators. Two juveniles involved in the attack were later arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department in the Wilshire Area, following a tip from the public.
While the identities and charges of the suspects were not disclosed, Benaim hoped that their arrests would serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar acts of violence. Reflecting on the incident, he urged for an end to senseless acts of aggression and called for a safer community where such incidents are not tolerated. The resolution of the case brought a sense of closure to Benaim, who could now focus on healing and rebuilding his sense of security in the wake of the traumatic experience.
