LangChain: AI Infrastructure Startup Raises New Funding Round
LangChain, an AI infrastructure startup that provides tools to build and monitor LLM-powered applications, is currently in the process of raising a new round of funding at a valuation of approximately $1 billion. The funding round is being led by IVP, according to three sources familiar with the deal.
The journey of LangChain began in late 2022 as an open-source project initiated by Harrison Chase, who was working as an engineer at machine learning startup Robust Intelligence at the time. The project garnered significant interest from developers, prompting Chase to transition it into a startup. In April 2023, LangChain secured a $10 million seed round led by Benchmark, followed by a $25 million Series A round led by Sequoia a week later, valuing the company at $200 million.
At its inception, LangChain addressed the limitations of LLMs by providing a framework for building applications on top of LLM models. This solution allowed LLMs to access real-time information and perform actions such as web searches, API calls, and database interactions. The project quickly gained popularity on GitHub, with over 111,000 stars and 18,000 forks.
As the LLM ecosystem expanded, new startups like LlamaIndex, Haystack, and AutoGPT emerged, offering similar features. Major LLM providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google also evolved their APIs to provide capabilities that were once unique to LangChain.
To stay competitive, LangChain introduced LangSmith, a proprietary product designed for observing, evaluating, and monitoring LLM applications, particularly agents. LangSmith has seen significant adoption since its launch, driving the company’s annual recurring revenue to a range of $12 million to $16 million.
LangSmith offers a free tier for developers to get started, with additional features for small team collaboration available for $39 per month. Custom plans are also offered for larger organizations. Notable companies utilizing LangSmith include Klarna, Rippling, and Replit.
Despite LangSmith’s success in the LLM operations space, it faces competition from smaller open-source alternatives like Langfuse and Helicone. IVP, the lead investor in LangChain’s latest funding round, declined to comment on the report.
