The 16-year-old is set to jet off to Sydney this weekend for a special training camp with the prestigious Australian rugby league club, South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Last year, Latuselu proudly represented both Aoraki and Otago before earning a spot on the South Island Scorpions 16s team that competed at the youth nationals.
Following her impressive performances, Latuselu had the opportunity to attend a New Zealand Warriors exhibition game, where her skills caught the eye of her coach who then helped connect her with the Rabbitohs.
During the upcoming training camp, Latuselu will have the chance to participate in “a few trial games,” and she is eager to experience the nuances of playing style between Australia and New Zealand.
“There’s bound to be a number of Australian players present, so I’m looking forward to observing the differences in their approach compared to players from New Zealand,” Latuselu shared.
While Latuselu only started playing rugby union two years ago, she quickly developed a passion for rugby league after trying it out last year. She now favors the 13-a-side version of the sport.
“I believe there are more opportunities for girls in league, and I find it more enjoyable,” she explained.
As a year 12 student at Waitaki Girl’s High School, Latuselu excels in the positions of prop and second row, relishing the physicality of carrying the ball and making impactful plays.
“I thrive on contact, I love taking on defenders,” she remarked.
With her sights set on a potential future in the NRLW, Latuselu is determined to make the most of this exciting opportunity.
