Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, has been found to provide quick relief from depression, according to a review conducted by researchers from the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford in the UK. This treatment has shown promise in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD), offering hope for those who have lost faith in recovery.

The study evaluated seven clinical trials involving 247 participants, as well as four protocol papers for future trials. Volunteers inhaled nitrous oxide at concentrations of 50 percent or 25 percent, with results compared to those who received a placebo. The higher concentration proved more effective in alleviating depression symptoms but also resulted in more side effects like nausea, headaches, and dissociation.

Researchers observed that nitrous oxide administration led to a reduction in depressive symptoms within just two hours, with relief lasting only temporarily. The treatment’s effects are believed to be linked to its calming effect on the glutamatergic system, a component of the nervous system associated with depression. Additionally, laughing gas is known to increase blood flow in the brain, aiding in the circulation of gases, waste, and nutrients.

With depression becoming a leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting over 300 million individuals, there is a pressing need for new treatments. Nitrous oxide could potentially be part of a new generation of rapid-acting therapies for depression, offering hope for patients who do not respond to conventional interventions. Future trials will explore optimal dosing strategies to maximize the benefits of this treatment in clinical practice.

The research findings have been published in the journal eBioMedicine, highlighting the potential of laughing gas as a viable treatment option for depression. As scientists delve deeper into understanding the mechanisms behind its effectiveness, personalized treatment approaches may emerge to cater to individual patient needs.笑
