The intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue was officially dedicated to the late rapper Nipsey Hussle on Saturday, fulfilling a dream that he had shared with his former partner, Lauren London. Speaking to the gathered crowd at the newly named Nipsey Hussle Square, London tearfully recounted how Nipsey had always believed that one day the entire section would bear his name. She said, “When me and Nip first started dating, we would drive by over here and he would be like, ‘You know, Boogie, one day, they’re gonna name this whole section after me.’ And here we are today.”
The original location of Nipsey’s The Marathon clothing store was situated near the intersection that now memorializes him. Tragically, Nipsey was fatally shot outside the storefront in 2019, leading to the closure of the store. However, his legacy lives on through his brand, and now his name is forever linked with the crossing.
Nipsey’s older brother and CEO of The Marathon brand, Blacc Sam, also spoke at the event, declaring, “His spirit and his soul is here in this section.” The dedication of Nipsey Hussle Square serves as a lasting tribute to the impact that Nipsey had on his community and the music industry.
Congratulations to Nipsey Hussle. The Marathon continues…
