Lauren Sánchez Bezos, in a candid admission, revealed that her wedding dress choice for her marriage to Jeff Bezos was not what she initially envisioned. Initially, she had dreamed of a strapless gown, but a transformative experience on a Blue Origin space flight to the Kárman line changed her perspective on life and style. “It went from ‘I want a simple, sexy modern dress’ to ‘I want something that evokes a moment,’ and where I am right now. I am a different person than I was five years ago,” she shared with Vogue’s Chloe Malle.
Her research led her to vintage photos of brides from the 1950s, where she found inspiration in Sophia Loren’s wedding dress from the 1958 film Houseboat. Determined to recreate the iconic look, Sánchez collaborated with renowned designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The result was a stunning high lace neck mermaid-line gown adorned with 180 hand-finished, silk chiffon-covered buttons, a masterpiece that took over 1900 hours to create. Sánchez described the entire process as a dream come true.
The original dress worn by Sophia Loren was designed by the legendary costume designer Edith Head, who was celebrated for her work with Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures. Head, with eight Academy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, crafted iconic looks for leading ladies like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Gloria Swanson.
Despite the modern twist on her wedding attire, Sánchez continues to draw inspiration from Old Hollywood glamour. In a recent appearance at the 2025 Breakthrough Prize, she paid homage to Loren by wearing a vintage John Galliano dress previously worn by the Fellini muse. Through her fashion choices, Sánchez celebrates the timeless beauty and strength of iconic women from the past, hinting at more Old Hollywood nods in her future wardrobe selections.
