Lee Chang-dong Returns with New Relationship Drama “Possible Love” on Netflix
Renowned Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong is making his comeback to feature films with “Possible Love” (working title), a relationship drama set to premiere on Netflix. This project marks his first full-length film since 2018’s critically acclaimed “Burning,” although he did direct the short film “Heartbeat” in 2022.
The narrative of “Possible Love” revolves around two couples whose contrasting lifestyles unexpectedly intersect, causing disruptions in their seemingly stable routines.
The film boasts a talented cast, including familiar faces from Lee’s previous works. Leading the ensemble is Jeon Do-yeon, known for her award-winning performance in “Secret Sunshine,” which earned her the Best Actress prize at Cannes in 2007. She will play Mi-ok, alongside Sul Kyung-gu as her spouse Ho-seok. This marks the fourth collaboration between Jeon and Sul, having previously appeared together in “I Wish I Had a Wife,” “Birthday,” and “Kill Boksoon.”
Sul Kyung-gu has also worked with Lee on “Peppermint Candy” and “Oasis,” while Zo In-sung takes on the role of Sang-woo and Cho Yeo-jeong portrays Ye-ji, rounding out the central quartet.
Reuniting with screenwriter Oh Jung-mi, who co-wrote “Burning,” Lee explores psychologically complex narratives that delve into Korean social dynamics through intimate character studies. His previous works have garnered significant recognition at festivals, with Venice honoring “Oasis” in 2002 and Cannes celebrating films like “Secret Sunshine,” “Poetry,” and “Burning.”
Production companies involved in “Possible Love” include Pinehouse Film Co., Ltd., Anonymous Content, LLC, and Nowfilm Co., Ltd.
Recent projects from the cast members include Sul Kyung-gu’s appearances in “A Normal Family,” “Idol,” and “The Merciless,” Jeon Do-yeon starring in “Kill Boksoon” and “Revolver,” Zo In-sung in “Moving” and “Escape from Mogadishu,” and Cho Yeo-jeong known for her roles in “Parasite” and “Hidden Face.”
