A legendary Magic City dancer, Gigi Maguire, recently spoke out in response to NBA player Luke Kornet’s criticism of the Atlanta Hawks’ promotion honoring the popular strip club. Maguire, a former performer at Magic City, believes that Kornet’s opinion is misguided as he has never visited the establishment himself.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Maguire expressed her views on the controversy surrounding the Hawks’ tribute to Magic City during a game against the Orlando Magic on March 16. She emphasized that those who hold negative perceptions of strip clubs have likely formed their opinions based on inaccurate portrayals in movies, rather than firsthand experience.
“He should see it for himself,” Maguire stated. “I think that a lot of people that have a negative in their mind about strip are the ones that have never been.”
Maguire debunked common misconceptions about strip clubs, highlighting that the reality is far from the negative stereotypes perpetuated in media. She emphasized that adult entertainment venues like Magic City provide a form of entertainment and should not be condemned based on preconceived notions.
Despite the backlash over the Hawks’ tribute night, Maguire defended the event, noting that it was a one-time celebration of an integral part of Atlanta’s culture. She criticized Kornet for his “selective outrage” and pointed out the disparity in his response to allegations of misconduct against women in the NBA.
In addition to Maguire’s perspective, another Magic City legend, Sonya Meadows, also weighed in on the controversy. Meadows, known as Platinum during her dancing days, asserted that stripping should not be viewed as disrespectful to women but rather as a form of entertainment akin to performances by Cirque du Soleil.
“We can’t put a stigma on entertainment,” Meadows remarked, highlighting the importance of recognizing the diverse forms of entertainment that exist in society.
While Maguire and Meadows’ insights may not quell the ongoing criticism of the Hawks’ tribute night, their passionate defense of their former profession sheds light on the misconceptions surrounding strip clubs and the need for a more nuanced understanding of adult entertainment.
