BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Over a thousand years ago, the legendary Norse explorer Leif Erikson embarked on a daring journey that would alter the trajectory of history, becoming the first European to set foot in the New World. This Leif Erikson Day, we draw inspiration from his fearless spirit, honor his lasting legacy of exploration, and renew our commitment to pushing the boundaries of human potential.

According to legend, Erikson’s adventurous spirit ignited during his youth in Greenland, where tales of distant lands stirred his imagination. Driven by an unwavering Christian faith, he gathered a courageous crew and undertook a monumental voyage of over 1,800 miles across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean, braving fierce storms and uncharted waters. His journey culminated in the discovery of a land he named “Vinland,” now recognized as L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada.

With this remarkable achievement, Leif Erikson solidified his status as the first European to land on North American soil, returning home as a celebrated hero with tales of uncharted territories. His groundbreaking accomplishment inspired generations of explorers, ultimately laying the groundwork for the establishment of the first permanent American settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, centuries later.

Erikson’s indomitable spirit of exploration remains a defining element of the American narrative, influencing everyone from the pioneers who forged the Western frontier to the Apollo 11 astronauts who planted the American flag on the lunar surface. His legacy endures through the millions of Americans with Nordic ancestry, who reflect the same qualities of bravery and determination, profoundly enriching our nation’s history, culture, and communities. My Administration continues to foster strong ties with the Nordic countries that shaped Erikson’s heritage. Together with our allies in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland, we are promoting fair trade and strengthening peace through resilience—ensuring a safer, more prosperous future for both America and the North Atlantic region.

As we celebrate the remarkable life of Leif Erikson, we embrace his legacy, honor the contributions of Nordic Americans, and recommit ourselves to the unyielding pursuit of discovery that has always been central to America’s journey.

To pay tribute to Leif Erikson, son of Iceland and grandson of Norway, and to celebrate our Nordic-American heritage, the United States Congress, through a joint resolution (Public Law 88-566) passed on September 2, 1964, has officially authorized the President to proclaim October 9 of each year as “Leif Erikson Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 9, 2025, as Leif Erikson Day. I encourage all Americans to honor the achievements and contributions of Nordic Americans to our nation with meaningful ceremonies, activities, and programs.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand this ninth day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and in the two hundred fifty-third year of the Independence of the United States of America.

                               DONALD J. TRUMP
