Dr. William H. Foege, a renowned figure in global public health, sadly passed away on January 24, 2026, at the age of 89. He was a recipient of the prestigious Medal of Freedom award in 2012 and also received the 2007 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Award for Humanitarian Contributions to the Health of Humankind. Dr. Foege had previously served as the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
One of Dr. Foege’s most notable achievements was his groundbreaking work on the eradication of smallpox, particularly in India, where he resided and dedicated many years of his life. His remarkable journey is chronicled in his 2011 book, “House on Fire.”
Having had the privilege to engage with Dr. Foege about his book, “House on Fire,” over a decade ago, I was deeply moved by his humility and wisdom. He graciously sent me a signed copy, which I still cherish to this day. Through his writings and speeches, Dr. Foege imparted invaluable lessons that remain relevant, especially during a time when science, multilateralism, and public health are facing significant challenges.
