Emily O’Leary’s Hand-Hooked Dog Rugs: A Unique Tribute to Man’s Best Friend

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to have your beloved pet immortalized in a work of art, look no further than Emily O’Leary’s hand-hooked dog rugs. These intricate pieces, based on photographs of actual dogs, capture the essence of our furry companions in a way that is both realistic and whimsical.

O’Leary’s rugs are not your typical depictions of dogs. She prefers to focus on “mutty” looking animals, those that don’t fit the traditional mold of a purebred. “I’m attracted to the shared history of humans and dogs—how the bulk of their domestication may have happened somewhat inadvertently,” she explains. This focus on the diversity of dog breeds adds a layer of authenticity to her work, making each piece feel truly unique.

Using a technique called rug hooking, O’Leary painstakingly creates each rug over the course of several months. This traditional method allows her to apply each loop of yarn at a different height, giving the rugs a three-dimensional quality that sets them apart from other forms of textile art. The process may be slower than other techniques, but the end result is well worth the time and effort.

O’Leary’s journey into rug making began with a background in embroidery. When friends suggested she create a dog-themed piece for an exhibition, she decided to take it a step further and create life-size canine rugs. The response to her work has been overwhelmingly positive, with viewers often feeling a deep emotional connection to the pieces. “I really feel like I’ve built a relationship with the object,” O’Leary says. “Sometimes the dogs I hook have wounds or scars. The dog rug I’m working on right now is missing a little chunk of her ear. I want to depict them as they are, not stuffed animal versions.”

Each rug is a labor of love, with O’Leary pouring her heart and soul into every stitch. The realistic details and weight of the pieces make them feel almost lifelike, inviting viewers to connect with them on a deeper level. Whether you’re a dog lover or simply appreciate fine craftsmanship, O’Leary’s rugs are sure to capture your imagination.
