Lindsay Clancy Trial Brought to Standstill, She Breaks Down

Lindsay Clancy‘s trial was interrupted when she broke down in tears during an autopsy testimony, saying, “I can’t do this.”

On Wednesday, August 12, the court session was paused twice after Clancy, 36, became emotional during the testimony of two medical examiners who had conducted autopsies on her children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, whom she killed in January 2023.

The first pause occurred after medical examiner Renee Stonebridge testified that the children died from asphyxiation and endured pain for 10-30 seconds before losing consciousness.

Another emotional moment arose when medical examiner Barbara Olson elaborated on Cora’s autopsy, detailing neck injuries and signs of ligature strangulation, and describing the pain caused by the attack.

Lindsay Clancy’s defense team contended that she might not be “criminally responsible” for the deaths of her three children, prior to the start of her murder trial. Before the trial commenced on Monday, July 20, her lawyer, Kevin Reddington, argued that Clancy was overmedicated for postpartum depression when she killed her children Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months.

During Olson’s description of Cora’s injuries, Clancy began to cry audibly and hyperventilate, stating, “I can’t do this,” as reported by a video from The New York Post.

Following these emotional moments, Judge William Sullivan instructed the jury not to let Clancy’s emotional display affect their judgment.

These instances of emotion were unusual for Clancy, who had mostly maintained composure throughout the trial. However, she previously cried during the August 6 hearing when Massachusetts medical examiner Dr. Kimberley Springer testified that Callan’s autopsy revealed “abrasions” and “some needle marks” from “therapeutic procedures.”

Clancy was observed crying while viewing the autopsy photos, with some jurors visibly moved during Springer’s testimony.

Clancy admitted to killing her children but pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges. Her defense argued that she was not criminally responsible due to being overmedicated and suffering from extreme postpartum psychosis at the time.

Lindsay Clancy had repeatedly requested medication changes before the tragic incident in January 2023, according to a nurse who provided treatment to her in late 2022. Psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta testified on Tuesday, August 11, that Clancy, 35, sought to change her medications multiple times despite concerns for her well-being.

Meanwhile, prosecutors argued that Clancy was fully aware of her actions when she killed her children. They highlighted her suicide attempt by jumping from her home’s second-floor window after strangling her children, suggesting it was indicative of intentional killings.

If found not criminally responsible, Clancy could be committed to a state mental health facility in Massachusetts. However, if convicted of first-degree murder, she faces a life sentence without parole.
