Jonathan Growcott, a conservation technologist and large carnivore biologist at the University of Exeter, believes that being able to identify individual lions by their roars could revolutionize lion monitoring efforts. This innovative approach could help conservationists count the number of lions in a given area, providing valuable data for conservation strategies in the face of habitat loss and poaching threats.

The study, which analyzed thousands of lion calls recorded in Tanzania’s Nyerere National Park and Zimbabwe, revealed distinct patterns in lion vocalizations. The full-throated roars followed a clear arc, rising in pitch before trailing off, while the intermediary roars were flatter and less elaborate.
