The news of the potential loss of one of Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets has shaken viewers of the Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest. The nonprofit organization, Friends of Big Bear Valley, which runs the 24/7 live cam, posted a statement acknowledging that only two of the eaglets could be seen following a snowstorm that hit the area overnight.

The statement released by FOBBV expressed sadness and uncertainty about the situation, stating that during the first feeding session of the day, only two chicks were visible. The view of the nest bowl remains partially obstructed by snow, making it difficult to see the entire situation. The organization emphasized that they are observers of nature and do not have all the details of what transpired.

Viewers of the live cam expressed shock and sadness upon noticing that only two eaglets were visible in the nest on Friday morning. The moderator of the livestream reminded viewers that they are witnessing the everyday life of Bald Eagles and encouraged them to trust the eagles and make healthy decisions for themselves.

The snowstorm that hit the San Bernardino mountains brought up to two feet of snow, with Jackie seen sheltering the eaglets as winds shook the nest. More snow was expected in the area, with temperatures forecasted to be in the 40s and 50s over the weekend.

Earlier in the week, Sandy Steers, the executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley, highlighted weather as the biggest threat to the eaglets, as they do not develop their waterproof feathers and layers of down until about six weeks after hatching.

According to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, only 50 percent of bald eagle eggs successfully hatch, and 70 percent survive their first year. Jackie and Shadow have faced challenges in previous years, with their eggs failing to hatch in 2024 and being eaten by ravens in 2023. Despite these setbacks, the couple successfully raised one chick in 2019 and another in 2022.

In an interview with KTLA, Steers emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the situation, stating that they do not have confirmation of what happened to the missing eaglet. The organization is waiting for clearer visuals to confirm the fate of the chick and will provide updates as more information becomes available. The loss of one of Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks faced by wildlife in their natural habitats. The future is uncertain, and when it comes to the latest developments in technology, we often find ourselves saying, “We’ll have to wait and see.” This sentiment rings true as we navigate through the ever-changing landscape of innovation and discovery.
