Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are gearing up for an epic Oscar parody on Monday’s “Live With Kelly and Mark” post-Oscars special. The duo is set to channel Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman in a tribute to their characters from the Neil Diamond band tribute film “Song Sung Blue.” The bedazzled and rhinestone-laden production promises to be a hilarious and entertaining watch.
The Oscar parody has become a beloved tradition on “Live,” with last year’s edition featuring Ripa as Glinda in a spoof of “Wicked.” This year, the producers decided to take on the iconic “Song Sung Blue” and recreate the trailer with Ripa and Consuelos stepping into the shoes of Hudson and Jackman’s characters.
The ambitious project required the duo to don multiple costumes, with Ripa revealing that they initially had 32 looks planned for the two-minute clip. Despite the challenges, Ripa and Consuelos were thrilled with the end result, with Consuelos stating, “Man, did they really nail it this year.”
Based on Greg Koh’s 2008 documentary, “Song Sung Blue” follows a Milwaukee couple who become local icons by performing Neil Diamond songs as “Lightning & Thunder.” In the “Live” parody, Ripa and Consuelos take on the roles of “Glitz & Glamour” for a fun and spirited performance.
Ripa and Consuelos found it easy to embody the “Song Sung Blue” characters, thanks to the familiarity of Neil Diamond’s songs. Ripa expressed her excitement for the project, calling the film universally loved for its mix of drama, comedy, and music, dubbing it a “feel-mostly-good story.”
“Live With Kelly and Mark” will air its “After the Oscars” show on Monday, March 16, featuring guests like Wyclef Jean and Andra Day. Comedian Matt Friend will report from the red carpet, while Leanne Morgan and Carson Kressley will provide commentary on the night’s biggest moments and fashion hits. DJ Cassidy will also join in for the festivities.
In addition to the post-Oscars special, Ripa and Consuelos will interview host Conan O’Brien and speak with winners backstage during the Oscars ceremony. The road to the Academy Awards on “Live With Kelly and Mark” includes a pre-Oscars show with special guests like Adrien Brody and chef Wolfgang Puck.
“Live With Kelly and Mark” remains the top entertainment talk show on television, with a dedicated fan base. The show is executive produced by Michael Gelman and Ripa, and is distributed in national syndication by Disney Entertainment.
Fans can catch a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action from the “Song Sung Blue” parody promo shoot on the show’s website. The images showcase Ripa and Consuelos in full costume, bringing the iconic characters to life in a fun and memorable way.
