Tragic news struck the football world as Liverpool’s talented forward, Diogo Jota, aged 28, lost his life in a devastating car crash near Zamora in northwest Spain alongside his brother, as confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation on Thursday.
The Castile and Leon regional fire department reported on their website that a car accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in the deaths of two young men, aged 28 and 26, after the vehicle caught fire.
“We mourn the loss of two remarkable athletes. The passing of Diogo Jota and his brother is a profound loss for Portuguese football, and we pledge to honor their memory every day,” stated the Portuguese Football Federation.
While Spanish authorities have yet to officially confirm the identities of the deceased, it is widely believed that Jota and his brother were the victims of the tragic accident involving their Lamborghini veering off the road.
The bodies have been transported to a forensics unit in Zamora for autopsies to determine the exact circumstances of their passing.
Diogo Jota, who recently tied the knot on June 28, played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent success, contributing to their Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup triumphs.
Having joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, Jota made a significant impact with 65 goals in 182 appearances across all competitions.
Additionally, he represented Portugal with pride, earning 49 caps and securing two UEFA Nations League titles during his international career.
