Neighbourhood Support Eastern Southland representatives, Karen Bellew and Kelly Young, recently met with Gore District Council staff to discuss how the organization could support the council during emergencies. Council critical services general manager Jason Domigan, people and culture general manager Nicky Cooper, and former Neighbourhood Support coordinator Sharlene Taylor-Giles were present at the meeting.
Neighbourhood Support has access to household statistical information that can help the council prioritize resources during emergencies. Through partnerships with NZ Police, Fenz, Civil Defence, and the local council, they can assist community members in need during crises.
Households that sign up with Neighbourhood Support can provide information about medically dependent or mobility-impaired residents, details about pets, and the availability of resources like generators or barbecues. This information can greatly aid the council in coordinating welfare and evacuations during emergencies.
Signing up for Neighbourhood Support is quick, free, and only takes five minutes. The organization’s core principles revolve around keeping communities safe, resilient, and connected. By coming together, keeping an eye out for one another, and offering assistance, the district can become an even better and safer place to live.
